A final consultative workshop convened this morning (10/11/15) between PNG Power Ltd and Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) to discuss JICA funded Ramu System Power Development Plan Master Plan and Lae Area Distribution Network Improvement Plan to upgrade the current supply in the Ramu Power Grid to meet the demands by 2030.
JICA PNG Chief Representative Shigeru Sugiyama says the Ramu grid covers a large area and supports a large population and industries including Wafi Gold Mine, Hidden Valley and MCC mine Madang depend on electricity for their operation. He says electricity is an important component for the country’s growth therefore proper planning and implementation through the different phase of the project is very crucial and these projects requires substantial funding from the government to support its National Electrification Roll Out Project to be achieved by 2030. According to studies carried out by a JICA team the demand in electricity continues to increase with the overwhelming industrial need and general use. It showed that there are many concerns for keeping the stable power supply with big demand and corresponding power plant compared to the system’s capacity. Furthermore by maximizing hydro power generation in Ramu Hydro Plant results in diesel and thermal generation saving fuel costs and raising the plant supply from 60% to 80%. diesel generation costs of around $21 million USD will be saved. Proper maintenance will prolong operation and maximise power supply. Immediate rehabilitation of existing hydro power plants and promotion of hydro power projects will encourage the country’s economic growth as well. There is also huge potential for thermal, solar, biomass and gas power generation to supplement the overall power capacity in cases of a long dry spell in the future once the projects and recommendation are implemented.
