The Londolovit people on Lihir are demanding the Government to address them immediately over the use of water supply to the Newcrest Mine, on the island.
The locals, through their mouthpiece, Londolovit Sagomana Association, are also demanding compensation of over 100-million Kina. Association Chairperson, Roselyne Arau says the wait is now into its fourth week and frustration is already building over the failure by State authorities to address them. Ms. Arau said in a statement, the more the Government delays in sending a State Team to Lihir island to address the Londolovit water issue, the more anxiety is taking its toll among the Londolovit villagers, whose water supplies the Lihir gold mine operations. On October the 12th, this year, a Ministerial delegation appointed by Environment and Conservation Minister, John Pundari, visited Londolovit and investigated the issue. They were supposed to have compiled a preliminary report for Minister Pundari within two weeks from the date of their visit. However, this did not eventuate leaving the people in the situation now they are in. Ms Arau is calling on the Government Chief Secretary, Isaac Lupari and CEPA managing director, Gunther Joku to explain why there was delay in visit by the State Team. NBC News
