PARLIAMENT Speaker Theodore Zurenuoc gained the support of Enga Governor Peter Ipatas over his removal of traditional carvings at the Parliament House.
Mr Zurenuoc had visited Mr Ipatas as a special guest at the inaugural provincial development conference. Mr Ipatas said PNG needed leaders with guts and vision who did not just blubber from the mouth but took bold and decisive actions as Mr Zurenuoc had done. "Nobody had the guts to do it," said Mr Ipatas. "If he has done anything wrong let God punish him." Mr Ipatas also responded to the Speaker’s invitation to all provinces to contribute their cultural items of value to replace the wooden lintels his Parliament House committee had removed from the Parliament’s grand entrance by inviting Mr Zurenuoc to the Enga museum in Wabag to see all the items displayed there. While delivering his keynote address to the conference held at Amapyaka International School outside Wapenamanda, Mr Zurenuoc said PNG had to find a common ground that would unite all its diverse peoples. He said Enga had grown strong and progressive in a very short time because of the visionary leadership of its leader (Ipatas) and also because it had one common denominator uniting all of its 300,000 people – its one Ipili language. He said PNG also needed one common denominator which united its diverse tribes and named that common denominator as its embrace of Christianity. That common denominator, named in the first line in the Constitution declaring ancient PNG to be Christian, was at the heart of his move to modernise and restore integrity, respect, and credence back to the Legislature, he told the cheering crowd. "We come from a very diverse cultural background with no common belief system," Mr Zurenuoc said. "Hence, the Christian faith united us. It became the common denominator that got us into believing in One God. That is why I believe the Christian faith is the only one that we must embrace in order to instil in our people the moral and ethical principles that are so lacking. It is the only culture we all can subscribe to. "Putting the pole of national identity and unity to represent this cultural and historical identity of our foundation as a nation is key in expressing our founding fathers’ desire to make PNG a Christian country."
