Police met with the families of two Hanuabada Villagers who were allegedly shot by police officers in January to assure them that a new investigation will begin immediately with their support and suspects will be apprehended.
It was also an opportunity for the police to come to an understanding with the villagers to allow police to attend to complaints and patrol the vicinity of the villager. Hanuabada was a no go zone for police for nearly 9 months following the shooting. The new investigation will be headed by Assistant Police Commissioner Crimes Mr. Victor Isouves and will be composed of new investigators from the Police Head Quarters as directed by the Police Commissioner Mr. Gari Baki. Director Crimes Mr. Moses Ibsagi apologised to the villagers today (22/10/15) for the delay in the investigation. He said the first investigation was done for a coronial inquiry. He also revealed that the findings did not identify the shooters and the witness statements were shallow. “It was not done thoroughly”, he said. He admitted that it was a police shooting and the support from the villagers will greatly assist in solving this case with evidence to allow for criminal prosecution. NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Mr. Ben Turi urged villagers to allow police to once more attend to complaints in the village. He said there were reports stolen vehicles coming into the village but police could not go into the village and used the incident as an excuse not to go into the village. Sir Dadi Toka whose grandson was one of the two male who were shot said through the intervention of the police justice can be served to the grieving families. The lack of police presence has also encouraged opportunists to commit crimes and this is a way to restore law and order.
