The Southern Highlands Provincial Government, represented by Governor William Powi, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) today with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Port Moresby, for ICRC to build a second community Health Post in Kalolo village of Kagua-Erave District in the Southern Highlands Province.
ICRC’s Head of Mission to PNG, Mr Gauthier Lefévre, who also counter signed the MOA said that healthcare in the highlands is always under attack during Tribal Fights and it is the mission of ICRC to alleviate consequences of tribal fighting for displaced communities and provide healthcare to the people who are also victims. “Currently there are no health facilities in Kalolo or the surrounding communities and the closest is a 20 kilometres walk which can be reached after 4 hours, therefore the health post will provide primary health care for over 20,000 people affected by tribal violence in the area,” Mr Lafe’ver said. SHP Governor William Powi was pleased with the project to go ahead in the remote area of Kagua-Erave and said that bringing health service to a place that experience tribal fighting is one of the top priorities for the Southern Highlands Provincial Government. “I’d like to thank the ICRC for doing this project with us and i believe that this is one way in which we can address the law and order issues in Kagua-Erave,” Mr Powi said. “There has been a lot of health facilities being destroyed by warring tribes during tribal fights, and now the government wants to let the people know that they have to take responsibility of the services and development that is brought into their area,” Powi said. He said that health is one of the key development priorities of the government and they look forward in seeing that all aid post, clinics and hospitals in the SHP receive a facelift through the K10million funding made available for this exercise. Work on the aid post will begin right away for four months through to the completion of the project.
