Unplanned pregnancy involving young and unmarried people is prevalent in every community in Papua New Guinea. Youths engaging in unprotected sex end up having an unplanned pregnancy or being part of an unplanned pregnancy which leads to more issues with abortion being predominant. Abortion not only is an illegal practice, but also unsafe and dangerous in the country according to Deputy Health Secretary Dr. Paison Dakulala. Despite the practice of abortion being illegal in the country, several flyers of abortion practicing agents have been spotted in Port Moresby, especially around the Boroko area. Dr. Dakulala said, "abortion is definitely illegal and considered as first degree murder in the country’ and those caught practicing it will be referred to the right authorities." He also advised that people must not involve themselves with such illegal practice as it is unsafe and dangerous, especially when practiced by unlicensed physicians who use herbal products that are not medically proven and can cost their lives.
