By: Jacob Marcos NDoH-Journalist The National Department of Health (NDoH) has recently committed considerable resources to establish Cancer registries at Port Moresby General Hospital and Angau Memorial General Hospital and to train staff on the use of the database. The NDoH has corrected a report in the National, Tuesday February 9th, 2016 which was titled "Cancer centre lacks data" by Dr John Niblet of Angau. The Department’s Cancer Unit Manager, George Otto said that it was not correct to say that the PNG National Cancer Centre functioned without information. Otto said that hospitals should be well-versed in keeping up-to-date cancer data. This would particularly involve the number of patients receiving treatment and the type of cancers being treated. “The Registry at Angau is within the cancer centre and the hospital and cancer centre need to collaborate to allocate staff to complete the information until such time as it is possible to allocate a worker to perform this function of a full time basis” he said. Otto said that staff at the Cancer Centre and the Hospital have received some training in the use of the system and that he would work with the two organisation to make this arrangement work. “The Cancer centre receives a lot of cancer patient referrals from around the country every year. There is therefore a significant amount of raw data that is kept in the centre. We need to get better at analysing this information to allow us to better plan services and treatments for the future. The information as also valuable to determine if there were any environmental factors influencing this disease” “Cancer centres need to find ways to get the registry operating, be innovative and proactive and make use of the staff available and it was a part of his role to ensure this was happening.” Otto said. “There is data available there and this should be being analysed to make assessments in terms of cancer incidence and prevalence rates, and cure rates for the common treatment modalities available at the cancer centre,”
