NCD Governor, Powes Parkop has supported the government decision to connect the capital (Port Moresby) to rest of PNG by building road networks. Mr Parkop said," a capital city not connected by roads or railways to neighboring provinces is not logical.
Governor Parkop was responding to recent protest against the proposed highway linking Port Moresby to rest of PNG by few Papuan leaders. Mr Parkop said " All capital cities of the world are accessible to their provinces or states by all forms of transport, especially by roads and rails. So if we wish to continue to have Port Moresby as our national capital, we must open it up to be accessible to the provinces. There are disadvantages and advantages in having the capital link to rest of the country. The proposed highway would bring benefits to the people of Central and the Southern region if they take advantage of it. Parkop said, the only thing the government needs to address the rural-urban migration. Government needs to provide basic services to the rural areas to stop migration.
