THE driver and crew of the PMV bus on which a teacher was killed along the Highlands Highway surrendered to police yesterday.
The two, from Hukuni No 1 village, were handed over by local leaders to Highlands divisional police commander Teddy Tei in Mt Hagen and were locked up. The torture and killing of the teacher triggered a week-long roadblock along the Highlands Highway in Barola by angry relatives. The roadblock cost trucking firms and other businesses millions of kina. The Hukni tribe, led by leader Fikus Noki, expressed their condolence over the death of the teacher and said it was not a plan by everyone to commit the murder. They said the two who were the main suspects were now in the hands of the police to face normal processes of the law. Mr Tei said criminal investigation division officers in Goroka will start investigations today. Apart from the demand of K50 million compensation payment from the Western Highlands and national governments, the Barola people wanted the suspects arrested before Western Highlands-owned PMV buses resume operations on their section of the road. Mr Tei cautioned PMVs from WHP not to operate on the road although the Barola people had said they could operate when the suspects surrendered. He commended all local MPs from Eastern Highlands for taking the issue seriously and addressing it. Mr Tei said there would be no more tulait tulait buses or ushers operating as crews at bus stops in the Highlands or operators will face prosecution. The WHP and national governments have not responded to the K50 million demand. Comments are closed.
