Plans are underway to improve the Mt Hagen Provincial Hospital into a Regional Hospital for the Highlands region.
Western Highlands Governor, Paias Wingti said, he wants the hospital to be developed so patients do not travel great distances to receive specialist treatment, such as cancer. Governor Wingti said, among improves planned for the hospital, include a cancer treatment unit. He said with the unit in place, patients with cases like breast cancer can be treated in Mount Hagen, instead of them traveling to Lae, Port Moresby or overseas. Improvement and effective delivery of health services is among Governor Wingti's development priorities, and the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority said, it's committed to working alongside the provincial government to achieve this goal.
