The Government says the Member for Lae Loujaya Kouza is bound by law to remain as Chairperson of the Lae City Authority.
Loujaya Kouza told the National Newspaper that she is stepping down as the authority's chairperson because of the lack of support from the Government. A statement was released from the Prime Minister's Office yesterday quoting a spokesman as saying the Lae Open MP cannot step down according to the law. The spokesman described the comments by Loujaya Kouza as disappointing and not constructive. The spokesman says there's been a lot of money and time put into advancing Lae city but it has been undermined by politics in the province. The spokesman says the Lae City Authority provides the means to deliver better services adding the Lae City Authority Act stipulates the chairperson is the member of Parliament representing Lae Open. The spokesman says it is not possible to resign nor can some other person or Board member be appointed Chairperson but if the Member for Lae does not undertake any duties, the Deputy Chairperson will call and preside over meetings. The Deputy Chairperson is the Lord Mayor of Lae.
