Questions on drought and government's handling of the disaster dominated this morning's question time in Parliament.
Recently, the Treasurer issued a statement advising every member of Parliament to allocate two-million-Kina each from their District Services Improvement Program funds to deal with the drought situation. However, Member for Telefomin, Solan Mirisim, said most of these funds have already been tied to other projects and questioned what has come about with the 30-million-Kina allocated towards the disaster. Mr. Mirisim also asked the government if it has plans and how it intends to deal with the current drought situation, should it continue into 2016. Finance Minister, James Marape, in response said the Cabinet will meet today on the situation. "Cabinet will sit later today to approve on a statement that government will release to the office of Deputy Prime Minister, or Prime Minister tomorrow and exactly what the government will do and as far as addressing the disaster issue that confront us especially and as far as the extension of drought. A 25-million kina has used to address firstly in the Highlands frost that took place earlier and from there on the extension of drought that is taking place. A total break up of the program will be announced through out government statement that will come tomorrow when the Deputy Prime Minster or Prime Minister makes a statement. " Mr. Marape admits the current drought is said to be the worst that has ever occurred.
