PNG DataCo Limited has partnered with Google to strengthen digital connectivity in Papua New Guinea and the broader Pacific region through the Pacific Connect initiative. This collaboration marks a key development in the region’s digital infrastructure, benefiting the people of Papua New Guinea and neighboring Pacific nations. The partnership will establish a branching unit towards Manus Island, Papua New Guinea, as part of the Bulikula subsea cable that will link Guam and Fiji. This subsea cable is expected to significantly enhance network capacity and reliability, contributing to economic growth and driving digital transformation throughout the Pacific. Minister Duma expressed the country's pride in being part of this initiative to enhance global connectivity. "By partnering with Google, we are positioning ourselves to play a critical role in shaping the digital future of the Pacific region," he said.
The Bulikula subsea cable will deliver substantial bandwidth to meet the rising digital demands of the region. This project positions Papua New Guinea as a central hub for submarine cable landing stations and IP transit, reinforcing its leadership in the Pacific’s expanding digital infrastructure. The new cable is set to reduce latency and improve digital experiences across Asia and the United States. Enhanced infrastructure is expected to attract investments, support local businesses, and create opportunities for economic growth in Papua New Guinea. This aligns with PNG DataCo’s mission to close the digital divide by providing all communities with access to reliable and affordable internet services. The financial transaction between Google and PNG DataCo Limited was finalized after gaining approval from both the DataCo Board and Kumul Consolidated Holdings Limited, underscoring the strategic importance of the initiative and its sound governance.
