The Parliamentary Referral Committee on Education (PRCE) has welcomed and thanked Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill and the National Executive Council for approving K7.826 million for the first phase of reforms in the national education system.
Wabag MP and chairman of PRCE, Robert Ganim, in welcoming the Cabinet’s decision said this is the first time for such reforms to address the ongoing teachers’ salaries and other entitlement problems in Papua New Guinea. He led the PRCE on a nationwide investigation between March and April last year which resulted in the Ganim Report that has now received the Cabinet’s attention and funding. Full implementation of the Reforms will roll out over five years and is estimated to cost K25.626 million. "It is good news for teachers nationwide. It is very welcoming and encouraging news for my committee. It is a sign of commitment the O’Neill/Dion Government has in solving the problems of our 48,000 plus teachers in the country, who sacrifice a lot in delivering education to millions of our school children every year. "I thank fellow parliamentarians and PRCE members comprising Deputy Chairman and the late Goilala MP, Daniel Mona, Eastern Highlands Governor, Julie Soso, and Jimi MP, Mai Dop for their tireless contributions. "I also thank the Speaker and Finschhafen MP, Theo Zurenuoc for the foresight in funding PRCE, the Parliament Clerk and the Parliamentary Committee Secretariat staff for the tedious work in compiling, editing and coming out with the final draft of the Ganim Report," Mr Ganim said.
