Four male students of UPNG have been arrested and taken into custody on Friday for allegedly being involved in the burning down of the 5 vehicles and a building at the university campus. According student representative Lako Kupa, the police have not made any formal charges since they took them in to custody and it has already passed 24 hours. Kupa said their lawyer Laken Aigilo also asked the police to formally charge them so a bail application can be filed, however attempts by the lawyer and the students in following process and procedure to bail the four students were in vain. “This is an unlawful detention and it is in breach of Section 42 of the Constitution which allows all individuals to have freedom of movement and the act of police amounts to Unlawful detention” said Kupa. Meanwhile Kupa said the burning of the vehicles and the building could have been avoided if only the administration had cooperated well with the students by reconciling as it was their call to bring the police into the campus which resulted in the shootout. He said there were a lot casualties during the police shoot out and the University administration has not even come out to condemn the actions of the police nor have they had a dialogue with the SRC after the shootout. “There were reports that police were shooting to disperse the students but being caught in the gun fire and a victim of the shooting, I would says police were trying to kill us and this is a serious matter that the university cannot just ignore” “So we’re simply asking the administration to come forward and let’s have a reconciliation and go back to class after that," said Kupa Meanwhile Assistant Police Commissioner for NCD and Central Sylvester Kalaut confirmed that the four male students were in custody and they were charged on four charges relating to illegal use of a motor vehicle . "This is not an unlawful act by police as claimed by the students Lawyer. These students are already in police custody and charged with further more charges to be laid once we gather evidences," said Kalaut. Meanwhile, Kalaut called on the students behaviours as criminal acts while police will continue with their investigations to what has transpired. PNGFM/PNGfacts
