The National Supreme Court has granted Former Police Commissioner Geoffrey Vaki K3000 bail after a bench warrant was issued on the assumption that he did not appear before the court for his case in relation to his alleged involvement into the warrant of arrest on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
Vaki was detained at the Boroko Police cell since yesterday and appeared before Justice Ellenas Batari today who granted the bail application filed by Vaki’s lawyer Mr. Sam Bonner. Justice Ellenas Batari said the bench warrant was issued on the grounds that Mr. Vaki was informed of his court case but did not appear before the court. He further stated that State Lawyers had no considerable backing to oppose the bail application. Justice Batari added that the bench warrant should not have been issued, unless Mr. Vaki deliberately missed court so it was apparent to him that the court was ill informed. The bail conditions are: Mr. Vaki must find other guarantors instead of his lawyer which could come into conflict as his lawyer. That the guarantors are informed and sign the certificates and pledged K1000 each Mr. Vaki must also report to the court registry office twice every month and must not leave NCD without written approval from a judge, he must not interfere with state witnesses and be in good behaviour at all time and must reside at his home at all times.
