Former PNG Petroleum Minister Jimmy Maladina today pleaded not guilty to a charge of domestic assault in a Sydney court. The charge stems from an incident that occurred over the weekend. Maladina, who is also the Esa'ala MP, was arrested by New South Wales police following a domestic dispute at Bondi. The incident led to calls being made to the police, resulting in his arrest. According to reports from the ABC, Maladina is facing one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The specifics of the incident have not been disclosed, but the charge indicates that the alleged assault resulted in physical injury.
Appearing before the Waverley Local Court this morning, Maladina was represented by counsel Margaret Cunneen SC. During the proceedings, Cunneen entered a plea of not guilty on Maladina's behalf, asserting his innocence in the matter. The court has adjourned the case until next week, at which time a hearing date is expected to be set. This adjournment allows for further preparations by both the defense and the prosecution. Currently, Mr. Maladina is out on bail with conditions attached. The nature of these conditions has not been specified, but they typically include restrictions to ensure the defendant's compliance with legal processes and the safety of involved parties. Also read
