A former Director General of the National Library and Archives has been arrested with his wife over allegations of misappropriating public funds.
The funds total over 118 thousand kina.. Jacob Hevelawa was said to have colluded with his wife who owns a private company to squander public funds. Police say Hevelawa 54 of Sufunduo Village in the Kubalia area of East Sepik was charged with one count each of abuse of office, conspiracy, official corruption and misappropriation of K118, 846. 00. His wife Miriam, in her late 40's was slapped with a count each of conspiracy and misappropriation. Police statement say, Miriam was Executive Director of Paja Sisters Trading in which husband Jacob corruptly awarded a contract for grass cutting, landscaping and rubbish removal. Three lots of cheque payments were released on the same day which police say were excessive and unjustifiable from the work done. They were arrested and charged last Tuesday and appeared in court on Thursday and are now out on a K2000 bail, with their case transferred to Port Moresby. NBC/PNGFACTS
