PAPUA New Guinea honorary consul in Japan Nobuchika Ihara has sounded the warning of negative politics affecting investors coming into the country.
Mr Ihara, who runs the Honorary Consulate of PNG in Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is also a businessman is the former chairman of the commodity board of New York. He has since retired and regularly travels between New York, Dubai, Japan and PNG. He said investors are not comfortable in putting their money in a country where there is political instability and uncertainty. Mr Ihara in a media conference yesterday said that bad media publicity has investors thinking twice about investing in any country. He said he had the opportunity to build a bridge, the Tagali Bridge in Hela Province, with the help of some engineers he brought from Japan. He said PNG has a lot of natural resources but lacks the experience and expertise to harvest and process these resources. "You have a lot of opportunities here but you are not controlling your country because the last time I came here, the Prime Minister was Sir Michael Somare and there was a transition from Somare to Prime Minister O’Neill," he said. He said at their time there was a court battle between the two prime ministers and today the Prime Minister is facing a warrant of arrest. "People overseas when they look at this country say it is not stable. I suggest that your country and your people must have a very solid government. You have a solid democracy and your people choose your members of Parliament and you must let them rule the country," he said. "The result of politics comes 10 years down the line. It takes time to understand those things. There is something good and something bad. "Your Prime Minister and the government ministers are working hard to run the country, to make it better. "I am Japanese and I love your country. I came here to work, to complete a mission. You Papua New Guineans should work hard to get complete independence." Comments are closed.
