Disturbing reports of Papua New Guinea girls especially in the Kandep area of Enga Province being sold by their families in exchange for food as reported by ABC News was revealed to be not of factual nature.
Enga Provincial Police Commander George Kakas said Police in Enga have no knowledge of the issue given the situation that families did that for survival. He said these actions are against the traditional rituals of Enga people to do that and he is condemning the reports saying the police were not informed or consulted before the reports were televised on ABC TV. He said what they normally practiced is to only exchanging marriages customarily with other clans and tribes with the idea that whenever such disasters of frost and drought including floods and landslips occurred destroying their food gardens, they would seek assistance from the clans and tribes that their families were married to and not to trade them for food like that. PPC Kakas said it is uncaring of parents doing that to their daughters and the police will be addressing that issue with the people to clarify the facts of what really happened when drought and frost affected the people of Enga.
