POLICE statistics have revealed that sexual offences are prevalent in East New Britain Province which has recorded the highest number of offences since 2012. The offences reported to police range from incest to aggravated rape. Deputy Police Commissioner Simon Kauba, in revealing this, said the offenders in most cases are known to the victims and police have been successful in their investigation and arrest of suspects. But he said more community awareness on how to prevent these offences is currently being incorporated as a strategy in ongoing police and community programs. Meanwhile a 70-year-old man from Vunaiting Village, Rabaul, has been arrested and charged for impregnating a 16 year old girl, which occurred during a two-month period last year. Police alleged that between June and July 2013 the suspect, George Gior Kankan, seriously sexually assaulted the 16-year-old girl. The suspect is alleged to have tried to pay her money to stop her from reporting the matter to her parents. But she was confirmed pregnant by doctors at Nonga Hospital. The matter was reported to police and the suspect was arrested and charged for the offence. Comments are closed.
