The maternal death rate at the Port Moresby General Hospital has doubled due to COVID-19. Eight women and their babies have died from COVID-19 complications within the past weeks. Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Professor Glen Mola, told NBC News, there have been 1 to 2 deaths per day in the maternity wing.
Professor Mola says, there are usually around 12 to 16 maternal pregnancy-related deaths per year - however, for this year, there have so far been 18 deaths. He clarified that women who are pregnant or planning pregnancies must get vaccinated as a matter of urgency.
