Ok Tedi Mining Limited is preparing to shut down its operations temporarily as a result of dry weather.
The El-Nino weather has caused water levels on the Fly River to drop, and ships cannot carry food or fuel supply up to Kiunga. Even copper concentrates cannot be transported to Port Moresby. A power rationing is underway at the mining town, while the workforce is slowly being reduced for an immediate temporary shutdown at the mine. A skeleton crew will remain on site to maintain security. The situation is similar to that of 1997 and 1998, when El Nino conditions shutdown the mine for more than six months.
