A curfew has begun in PNG's Tourism town of Alotau and surrounding areas in Milne Bay Province .The curfew will continue for one month. It is one of a few resolutions by the Provincial Law and Order Committee to counter current tensions between police and criminals, brought on by the killing death of notorious criminal Tommy Baker last Thursday. The Provincial Law and Order Committee met on Tuesday this week and on Friday, resolutions including a curfew were announced and simultaneously effected. Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Peter Barkie says the curfew is between 12 midnight and 5 am within Alotau Town.
He says for areas outside the town, the curfew starts at 10pm to 5am. No boats or ships are allowed to move between 6pm and 5am daily unless cleared to do so. Other resolutions include looking into fast-tracking the replacement of a Resident Judge, after the untimely death of incumbent Justice Danajo Koeget last November. This includes temporary accommodation arrangements for hospital staff on duty within the town precincts to maintain operations of this vital service at such a time. The curfew period coincides with a one-month Police operations plan to quell current tensions in the once peaceful town.
