Chief Secretary to Government Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc has released the consolidate Constitution to celebrate Papua New Guinea's 40 years of independence.
The constitution has gone through some significant changes over the last 40 years. One most significant amendment is the inclusion of the parts dealing with Provincial Governments starting our journey towards decentralization. The other is the inclusion of special arrangement for Bouganville, starting the process of healing old wounds, and reaffirming commitment to the needs of all citizens of PNG. Sir Manasupe says he's pleased to see the creation of the sovereign wealth fund and the Independent Commission Against Corruption, to fight corruption. Other changes also include the election of a women's representative to parliament. Meantime, Sir Manasupe, says the National Constitution is the main reason Papua New Guinea has remained a united nation for 40 years. Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc says the Constitution is the building block of peoples way of life, the type of country and democracy that people enjoy today. He says the country is diverse, with over 800 different languages and a thousand tribes, over five main Christian churches, and many more smaller denominations and faith groups and religions, which is a recipe for chaos and trouble. However, Sir Manasupe says this is due to everyone's tolerance and accepting others with all their differences and learning to work together. He says it was this unity in diversity that the Constitutional Planning Committee envisaged when putting together the constitution.
