The Constitutional Law Reform Commission has recommended a total ban be imposed on the Riverine Tailings Disposal method for any future mines in the country.
CLRC Secretary Dr Eric Kwa says this is amongst 19 recommendations made from a review conducted on the country's environmental and mining laws relating to management and disposal of tailings. Dr Kwa says the recommendations taken from a nationwide consultation and review will be presented to Parliament shortly. Dr Kwa presented the report of the nationwide review in Port Moresby yesterday. "We are proposing that they'll be a total ban on Riverine Tailings. No more disposal of mine waste into the rivers of Papua New Guinea in the future mines. We are talking about current mines. Current mines they've got approval, processes are in place, let them operate. But for future mines, we are proposing that they'll be no more Riverine Tailings. No dumping of waste into the waters." The review is the result of complaints raised by the people and stakeholders of Central province's Tolukuma Gold Mine and dumping of it's tailings to the Angabanga River. Comments are closed.
