A CATHOLIC priest and a church worker died after a boat they were travelling in with five others capsized in rough seas.
The incident happened around 3pm last Saturday in Uvol, Pomio district, East New Britain. The priest has been identified as Father Augustine Kaire, 34, from Napapar Ward. He was serving at Gunanba parish. The church worker was identified as Esau Vuvul, 40, from Gunanba Ward. He was a layman in the Gunanba Catholic parish. Provincial police commander Anthony Wagambie confirmed yesterday that the boat was travelling to the Sahalil Community School in Uvol. Wagambie said the boat encountered rough seas. A large wave hit the boat, causing it to overturn. The other five passengers clung to floatable items and managed to make their way to shore. The bodies of the two were later recovered. Efforts to revive them failed. Wagambie said the bodies were airlifted by helicopter to the Saint Mary’s Vunapope hospital on Sunday. Dr Felix Diaku of Vunapope hospital confirmed the deaths. Wagambie said police officers from Kokopo were investigating the incident and would be travelling to Pomio to talk to the people there.
