Director of the Institute of National Affairs, Paul Barker says that the 2015 national budget has not reflected the government’s intention to boost the renewable resource sector.
He called on the government to revive all boards of agriculture institutions. Barker criticised the government for not emphasising the agriculture sector. He says the plan to improve and enhance the agriculture sector will only be realised if the government aligns all boards of the agriculture industry. “The managements of agriculture institutions have gone astray in their roles, but if the government pushes to revive the sector, work needs to start now,” Barker added. Barker said coffee, cocoa, copra and palm oil are the main crops that Papua New Guinea can dig into, to maintain its market and give something back to the people, specifically farmers. The non-renewable resources will one day be gone, and the government seriously needs to help bring back these cash crops to its market, he stated. He said there has been little work done to revive coffee and cocoa, but a proactive approach must be guaranteed by the government to help these industries. PNGfacts/EMTV Comments are closed.
