Air Niugini workers nationwide have called on the government to set up a commission of enquiry into the operation of the airline.
The workers through the National Airlines Employees Association raised the matter with Prime Minister, Peter O' Neil, during their meeting recently. The call for an investigation comes amidst a drop in the national flag carrier's profit compared to previous years. The workers when gathered to oppose the government's announcement of partial privatisation last week have raised concern that Air Niugini is making loss in the recent times. They claim that the same number of workers that generate revenue for the company some years back are still performing their task but, question why the company is making loss this days. The employees through their union, the National Airline Employees Association have discussed with prime minister Peter ONeill on the matter, and have requested for a commission of enquiry.. Air Niugini management in response briefly confirm the decrease in profit, and said this drop is expected due to certain factors, which includes the winding down on the Construction phase of LNG Project. The management explained that, during and before the construction phase of the LNG project, number of travelers increase, and the airline was busy, both international and domestic, thus making more profit. Currently, its opposite, and that's when the profit margin see a slight drop.
