The Trade Union Congress is calling on the Minimum Wages Determination Board to to ensure comprehensive regulations are included in their recommendation.
This should also include inspection and compliance which the country lacked over the years. It had affected a lot of low income earners. The union among others has recommends to the board that Labour Department reorganize the operations of the current inspectors away from the current provincial and district level so that it is a central responsibility. Union further said by reorganizing the inspectors, the responsibility of conducting inspections and follow up activities such as prosecution and recovery of wages will be discharged from the Head Quarter directly under the department's Secretary. A task Force is also recommended to be form to over see the inspection and compliance aspects in ensuring employees, including security guards and shopper keepers are getting the standard wages. President John Paska adds with out proper enforcement, the current conditions for wages is of very limited relevance. Meantime, new Minimum Wage Determination is expected to be released at the end of this month. It will be made known soon after the Cabinet approves it. The Board is also in a lock up over the new Minimum Wages Determination and its preparing related submissions, for the National Executive Councils deliberation. Comments are closed.
