The Supreme Court has asked the Electoral Commission to conduct a by-election for the West Sepik Provincial Seat, as soon as possible.
This comes after an appeal by ousted Governor Amkat Mai, was dismissed this morning (Monday 30th March, 2015). The three men Supreme Court bench chaired by Justice Allan David dismissed the four grounds of appeal by Mr Mai. They are based on alleged errors committed by a pre-siding judge when he dismissed the 2012 election win of Mr Mai on November 29th, 2013. The appeal process took almost a year, and was heard last December until the decision was reached. Underage and double voting at the Oksapmin area, is what caused the election victory of Mr Mai. The people of Sandaun are expected to go before the polls within the next two months to elect a governor. Meantime, an urgent application filed by Mr Mai, to stop the Sandaun Provincial Executive Council to elect a new-acting Governor, has been withdrawn. This is because his appeal has been dismissed.
