​Bus Driver Killed by Gang Along PNG's Highlands Highway, Governor Condemns Killing

Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands Governor, Hon. Simon Sia, has condemned the brutal killing of a bus driver who was murdered by an armed gang during a hijacking attempt along the Highlands Highway. The tragic incident occurred at Tiunka village, leaving the community in shock and raising fears among public motor vehicle (PMV) operators and commuters.

According to initial police reports, the driver was operating a coaster bus when a group of armed men blocked the road and tried to seize the vehicle. In the confrontation that followed, the gang shot and killed the driver before fleeing the scene. The senseless act has sparked outrage among the travelling public who rely on the Okuk Highway for daily transport and trade.

Governor Sia condemned the attack, describing it as a heartless act that robbed an innocent man of his life. “I condemn the manner in which innocent life is taken,” he said. “Eastern Highlands has no problem with people from the upper highlands, and taking an innocent life at such a young age—when his wife, children, and tribe didn’t expect such a tragic death—is deeply painful.”

He extended his condolences to the victim’s family and urged them to remain calm as investigations continue. “I appeal to the family members not to take the law into their own hands but to allow justice to prevail. We are all innocent except the one who pulls the trigger and murders an innocent life, and he will face the consequences of his actions,” he said.

Governor Sia directed the Provincial Police Commander to conduct a full investigation and ensure that the killers are apprehended and prosecuted. He also appealed to community leaders in surrounding villages to cooperate with the police and surrender those involved. “You cannot hide in your caves; the law will catch up with you,” he warned.

Highlighting the importance of the Highlands Highway, Governor Sia said the road serves as a lifeline linking seven provinces and supporting key national projects. He urged residents along the stretch from Kasam to Daulo Pass not to obstruct traffic or engage in criminal activities that threaten public safety.

Governor Sia further assured the victim’s family that the Eastern Highlands Provincial Government would support the police investigation. “This is a willful murder, and the perpetrator will face full justice and serve time in prison. They have no place in our peaceful society,” he said.
