Betelnut sellers at the Laloki Market in the Central province say they are losing money because there are no proper facilities at the market.
Eddy Bari - a betelnut seller told NBC News, they are losing a lot of money daily, because they do not have a proper place to do their marketing. He said the retail market does not have a proper market place, toilet, water, power supply and storage facilities, and is too small to accommodate all the sellers at one time. Mr. Bari said the only house built so far can only accommodate about 80 sellers, while the rest of them are forced to build makeshift shelters outside, to sell their betelnut. He said most of the sellers live in Port Moresby, and travel up the highway everyday to buy and sell betelnut, but cannot bring back any remaining stock, because there is no proper storage facility, and this is also affecting them. Bari is appealing to the NCD and Central governors to make sure these facilities are quickly built, if they are serious about imposing the betelnut ban. PNG Facts / NBC Comments are closed.
