Minister for Communications, Information Technology and Energy and Bulolo MP Hon. Samuel H Basil has welcomed the Parliamentary Privileges Committee ruling on Madang MP Hon Brian Kramer’s referral. Hon. Kramer was referred by Member for Tewaii-Siassi Hon Dr Kobby Bomareo to the privileges committee for alleged demeaning comments on a Member of Parliament for a facebook post with Hon Basil’s picture with the caption “has dumb become dumber?” The privileges committee had ruled that Mr Kramer was guilty and ordered him to apologise on the floor of Parliament or be suspended for two sessions of Parliament. While welcoming the ruling, Minister Basil condemned the arrogance with which Mr Kramer received the ruling on his conduct. “The refusal to apologise just shows the kind of person Mr Kramer thinks he is: someone who is always right regardless of the impact of his own words about other honourable MPs who are mandated by their people; and how this conduct is seen according to Standing Orders of Parliament and the established Parliamentary Committees and their specific roles,” said Mr Basil. “Mr Kramer’s threat to take the Privilege Committee ruling to the National Courts should be taken seriously. Just like Mr Kramer is at liberty to take the Parliamentary Committee ruling to the courts, the National Parliament is at liberty to do the same for contempt of Parliament. “No MP is above the law and Parliament Standing Orders on Parliamentary Committee Systems. I urge the Speaker and the Parliamentary Legal Services to ensure he goes to the National Court – for contempt of Parliament,” said Mr Basil. Comments are closed.
