Deputy Opposition leader Sam Basil has called on the government to be wary and rethink its decision to privatize PNG Power after NEC’s recent announcement through the media on privatizing the electricity provider.
Mr. Basil said proper consultations must be endorsed to all citizens to fully understand the move by the government and how it will be carried out. “We must put some measures in place to rescue the entity before attempting to privatize it.” He said any government must exhaust all attempts to rescue its businesses and after years of attempting to rescue the entity fails, options must be provided as well to offload it to private or public companies. He said the government must make sure Papua New Guineans own majority of the shares in the privatized entity and; or must participate fully in buying shares.
