Twenty-five Australian Federal Police officers will be stationed in Mt Hagen under the enhancement cooperation program. They will arrive this week and will primarily play advisory roles in supporting the policemen and women of the Western Highlands Province.
Provincial Police Commander Martin Lakari said this yesterday morning during a parade at Mt Hagen police station. Commander Lakari said the arrival of the Australian policemen in the province is a major boost for the police. “They will mainly play an advisory role but will also take part in most of our policing programs in the province which we are currently implementing like foot patrols, road blocks and attending to complaints,” Mr Lakari said. The provincial police commander said his men and women are effectively implementing the law and order programs stipulated under the police modernisation program and the arrival of the Australian police officers will boost and increase the number of police personnel enforcing law and order in the province. Mr Lakari also stressed to his policemen and women that the Australian police officers will not isolate themselves but will work under the policing programs that are already in place in the province. “The Australian police will not bring in any new policing programs or policies of their own but will fit into the existing programs and will mainly provide advice on how effective these programs will be implemented,” he said. He urged his policemen and women to co-operate with their Australian colleagues and learn as much as possible from them in terms of skills and knowledge in policing. Mr Lakari said they will work and stay in the province for an indefinite period. Comments are closed.
