An Australian citizen of PNG origin has been arrested and charged this afternoon with one count of remaining illegally in Papua New Guinea. She breached Section 16(1) (a) of the Migration Act, 1978 and one count of unlawfully having in her possession forged entry permit, breaching Section 16 (1)(k) of the Migration Act, 1978. Ms Sarah Cynthia Kane was brought to the National Fraud & Anti-Corruption Directorate office this afternoon at Konedobu, where she was interviewed, arrested and charged and later taken to Boroko Police Station and placed in the cells. She will appear in court next week and answer to her charges. Originally from Kiburu village, Imbongu District of Southern Highlands Province, Ms Kane is married with one child and lives and works in Brisbane as a Development & Research Specialist. She is an Australian citizen and lives in Brisbane. It is alleged she travelled to PNG on 30 November 2017 on a Tourist Visa and was supposed to have returned to Australia on 30 December 2017, however she failed to return as scheduled and overstayed her tourist visa by 2 years 3 months. On the 8th of March 2020, she tried to return to Australia on a fake Visa when she was detected by the Immigration officers on duty at the departure counter at Jacksons International Airport, Port Moresby. She was interrogated and admitted she had paid K5, 000 cash to a member of an alleged syndicate group who is responsible for the manufacturing of fake Visa Two other persons involved in such Visa scheme have already been charged by Police and this is the third of such case. Director of National Fraud Anti- Corruption Directorate Detective Chief Superintendent Matthew Damaru in a statement says the members of the syndicate involved in producing the fake entry permits are known and as the investigation progresses, they will be arrested and charged.
