A number of asylum seekers have reportedly been arrested following disturbance at the detention center. According to Radio New Zealand International, news of the incident emerged after refugee advocacy groups reported a riot squad was mobilized when asylum seekers breached the center's perimeter fence yesterday afternoon. Australia's Immigration Minister Scot Morrison confirmed receiving reports that PNG police have arrested a number of asylum seekers and the center is now calm, and staff are safe. He said some have received medical treatment and damage at the center is "minor". The Refugee Action Coalition said the riot escalated after detainees were told they would not be resettled in Australia, but Mr Morrison dismissed those claims. About 1300 asylum seekers are housed on Manus Island. RNZI Comments are closed.
