FULLY-armed and uniformed Indonesian security forces have illegally crossed the PNG border in Western Province early this month and terrorised PNG villagers.
Details of the intrusion were contained in a report that is now before the national Government. It also details how the Indonesian forces came more than 30km to the Wado villages in Western Province. Residents of six villages along the Torasi River have left their homes, fearing threats made by the Indonesian soldiers. Two of these alleged incidents involved Indonesian soldiers illega-lly crossing the PNG-Indonesian border and causing villagers at Bala-muk, Wando, Bensbach, Bondobol and Korombo one and two villages to flee their homes and move to the Bensbach Lodge facility. The first incursion reportedly happened on February 11 between 6:45pm and 7:15pm. Indonesians dressed in civilian clothes went into Balamuk village about 27km east of the border, the report revealed. The ward councillor of Balamuk was questioned by the Indonesians, who were fairly thought by the villagers to be of military background because of their physical appearance and behaviour. The second incident took place the next day, on February 12. This time, the Indonesians were in full military uniform and were armed. They travelled up the Torasi River on a watercraft powered by two 200 horsepower motors, and flying the Indonesian flag. From the uniform they wore, it was clear that 10 of them were army and three were naval personnel. They were accompanied by three civilians. The second intrusion was witnessed by an auxiliary police constable. PNG Facts/ Post Courier Comments are closed.
