The remaining WNB Athletes who were stranded in Lae after the 6th PNG Games took the street of Kimbe Town protesting upon arrival at the wharf.
A team management who had gone down to the wharf to see the athletes was badly beaten up leaving the official sustaining serious injuries. The official is at the Kimbe General Hospital receiving treatment. Police managed to prevent the angry athletes into entering the Provincial Government as well as the events stage. A couple of stones were thrown onto the stage as few government officials made attempts to address the rowdy athletes. Provincial Administrator – Williamson Hosea, managed to address the crowd as police stood guard. A petition was handed to the administrator to look into it and take drastic action towards the team management. The petition was on the following grounds; change of team management, auditing into the 1.3 million kina funding, treasury to produce copies of statements of commitments, do away with team management consultants and medallists to be awarded recognition. The administrator assured the athletes that their petition would be looked into. Mr Hosea said he was aware of the lack of coordination over in Lae and there would be a review and is expecting a report from the team management as well. With the administrator’s assurance, athletes were calmed down as the provincial government arranged for transport to their respective areas. Comments are closed.
