CHRISTMAS celebrations in Tari and the new Hela province started on a wrong note with the public murder of a young policeman yesterday in the heart of Tari town. The incident happened about 20 meters away from the Tari police station and at the crowded Tari town market and bus- stop areas.
Newly appointed Hela provincial police commander Chief Insp (CIP) Mark Yangen confirmed the killing, adding that the late policeman is the second policeman to be killed by machete-wielding warriors and thugs without any respect for the rule of law and authority this year right in front of the Tari police and near the main business, banking, commercial, economic and administrative hub of the new province. CIP Yangen blamed the crowded township as the cause of the killing, adding that the market, bus-stop, offices, banking, administrative centre, shops and the airports are all crowded and situated close together making it a haven for criminals, thugs and war-loads and tribal enemies to take cover among the crowd and make a get - away easily without being caught or detected. CIP Yangen said the policeman is the second to be killed in cold- blood in Tari after another reserve policeman from Hayapuga local government council (LLG) area in Tari was also murdered allegedly by armed tribal enemies in September this year. CIP Yangen yesterday called on the Hela national leaders to find a suitable market away from the main business hub of the town to prevent public murders and other related lawlessness activities, adding that apart from the two law enforcing officers killed in public in Tari, there have being other related cases of public murders among tribal enemies and this has to come to a stop. Tari police identified the young policeman as Koju Angobe of Dauli village in Tari who is attached with the public safety division (PSD) at Tari police station. Police said Late Koju was at the market place when some suspects used a sharp kitchen- knife and pierced him in the chest. His colleague policemen said with the knife still pierced in his chest, the late Angobe ran towards the police station and upon seeing his colleagues at the station, pulled out the knife and collapsed in front of them. The shocked colleagues rushed him to the Tari hospital but the policeman died after one and half hours later at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. Acting Tari hospital chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Hamiya Hewali confirmed the death, adding that the policeman was rushed to the ICU and the operating theater where he was attended to by Tari hospital based international medical organizations Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF) or Doctors without Borders with assistance from doctors at the hospital. He said though the doctors tried their best to save him, the policeman succumbed to death after one and half hours due to the severity of the knife wound. Dr Hewali said it was a serious and deep- wound and must have damaged some important blood vessels, lungs or the heart which may have caused the death, Dr Hewali said they met with PPC Yangen, the relatives and agreed that the body remain at the hospital morgue for the night for an autopsy to be carried out tomorrow (today). Meanwhile, police are still investigating the case as they have yet to arrest the suspects involved in the murder. PPC Yangen yesterday evening led his policemen to Dauli village to talk to the relatives of the Late Angobe to assure them that police in Tari would get to the bottom of the killing so that the perpetrators face the full force of law. Yesterday afternoon, angry Tari policemen, frustrated at the brutal murder of their comrade, fired several gun-shots and chased away all sellers and vendors at the Tari town market. Police warned that the Tari market would be temporarily closed while PPC Yangen is already contemplating plans to reinforce police operations into the festive period in Hela following the cold-blooded murder of one of his men yesterday.
