The special joint security operation in Hela arrested 79 suspects, alleged to be involved in tribal warfare in the province.
Commander of the special operation, Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Mark Yangen told NBC News they confiscated five homemade guns and one factory made rifle during the dawn raid yesterday. But the suspects were all released on bail, because the Tari police cell is under renovation and they could not be detained. Two alleged ring leaders of the groups were however denied bail. Two of the suspects are ring leaders of the tribal fights from both factions of Linapini and Paipali which has claimed more than 25 lives including the three children. Forty-Seven (47) of the suspects arrested are from Paipali, 21 are from Linapini and 11 suspects are from Angore tribesmen of the PNG LNG Project. Two of the ring leaders from both factions were refused bail and will be taken to Koroba cell in the Korobe/Lekapiago District. The Commander said the unfortunate thing for the special operation is that there is no magistrate in Tari to preside over the cases as the residential magistrate in Tari has left after his contract expired. He has appealed to the ACP to Highlands Region and the legal officer to sent one immediately to preside over the cases. Comments are closed.
