Medical workers at Angau in Lae are continuing to monitor the condition of some of the 60 people admitted last night for food poisoning.
The fish were brought in by four people from the Bukawa coast outside Lae city and were sold at cheap prices at the Papuan Compound market. Late yesterday, men, women and children were rushed to the hospital. At least one member from every home in the Papuan Compound community became sick after eating the fish. Dino Marax, a resident at the Malaita Street was there when the first lot of people began showing symptoms of food poisoning. He said people developed eye irritations and were feeling drowsy when brought to the clinic. The fish were sold at K10 each, a price that is significantly cheaper than its normal retail price at big supermarkets. The fish were taken home, cooked and eaten. At around 2:30pm yesterday afternoon, the first 40 people were rushed to the Milfordhaven clinic. They were checked and later transported to the ANGAU hospital where they were put on drips and given further medical attention. By last night, more people were brought to ANGAU. Many of them were treated and sent back home. Dr Alex Peawi of the Accidents and Emergency Department at ANGAU says the infection is not life-threatening. Many of the patients were treated and discharged within 12 hours. Dr Peawi says the fish contains chemicals, which are not foreign but are produced inside the fish. The chemical reaction takes place when the fish is not stored properly under cold temperatures. Those selling the fish were arrested yesterday, but no formal charges were laid against them.
