The PNG Acting Electoral Commissioner, Simon Sinai says a total of K400 million is projected to cover the cost of the 2022 national election. He says the funding covers the 2021 preliminary preparations from electoral roll verifications to return of writs. The Acting Commissioner says they wish to create an environment to bring back credibility to the democratic election process and develop strategizies to spread out the congested workload six (6) months before the election. As preparation and talks on the national election are echoing in corridors of Waigani the Electoral Commission is projecting around K400 million for the cost next year compared to K300 million in 2017. Acting Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Sinai says this funding covers 2021 preliminary preparations from electoral roll verifications, updates, polling, counting and return of writs.
Mr. Sinai told NBC News that they are optimistic to get non-sensitive preparations done this year. Non-sensitive preparations are electoral roll updates under a biometric system to produce a photo roll and issuing of Voter ID card for use in polling, purchase big-ticket items and polling kits. Meanwhile, Mr. Sinai says in early 2022 the Commission opt to see logistics, staff recruitment, training, the printing of ballot papers for polling, followed by counting and return of the writ. About 6 months remaining before the national election program commences, the Acting Commissioner says they hope the government will support the Commission with the funding support of K100 million in election funds to carry out their activities for this year. These are strategies set by the Electoral Commission which depends entirely on the government to ensure they are achieved with funding support.
