The Madang Provincial Disaster Office said it cannot launch a search for 11 people who went missing at sea between Manus and Madang, because it does not know the exact location of the incident.
Provincial Disaster Director Rudolph Mangallee sai that they have been relying on communication company Digicel and the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Team in Port Moresby, to trace the last phone call the boat people made to their relatives on land. Mr. Mangelle said there is no information yet from either Digicel or the N-M-S-A. "I don't think I can wait any longer because you know, that's life that you are talking about and they've been out for long.So I'm trying to negotiate for my officers and with the police, should we will have to, at least today or tomorrow, about the search party has to go out now.Regardless of not identifying their location, I think we'll have to look around and search where they could be.You cannot where wait for decision, I think, even though its important to know the location ( Question....Sir, prior to this incident where there any warnings from authorities like NMSA and the National Disaster office to the public regarding the weather system?) Ans: ".Before the festive season begin, I (Mr Mangallee) went to the media, here in Madang, I used the radio.I really emphasize that during the festive season, there should not be any movement out of the province because during this time, its very dangerous. The weather is not considerate for people to move around". The missing 11, include two children, who left Lorengau on December 29 in a 23-foot banana boat, but failed to arrive as scheduled on December 30 in Madang.
