POLICE drinking while in uniform are an embarrassment to the constabulary and will face disciplinary action, says a senior officer.
Internal Affairs Director Chief Superintendent Robert Ali was commenting on a photograph showing police officers based at Daru Police Station holding cans of beer. The photograph has been shared numerous times on Facebook.
Ali said yesterday that he had already tasked the Western province provincial commander to identify the officers.
“Once the officers are identified, we will take disciplinary actions against them,” he said. “We have had to discipline officers for drinking while in uniform a couple of times already.
“I call on police officers to please have some pride and respect for the uniform you wear.”
Ali said it was not a crime to drink alcohol but they must not do so while in uniform and on duty.
“There is no law that says officers should not drink while in uniform. But it is part of the code of conduct of the constabulary.
“So we will take disciplinary actions against the officers once they are identified.”
He said the photograph gave the police force a bad image.
Police Minister Jelta Wong had voiced his displeasure with police officers drinking while in uniform.
