By Petrus GAND CORRUPTION has affected many of our [Papua New Guinea] universities over the years. Despite enrolling a good number of students on merit, corruption has found a way to thrive in the academic institutions. Corruption is found in almost every government institution. People pay public servants in exchange for favours and services. What is happening to PNG? The citizens' national pride is diminishing, causing the people to fail their duty to take ownership and act collectively in every walks of life for the growth of this nation. We are the key to driving the development of our country. Corruption seems to be the next accepted trend that is drastically eating us alive, prolonging our progress. Transparency is key to ensuring that we enjoy a good society. People with lower grades make their way to universities by bribing their way in. There are reports of student grades being altered. Certain students access the dining hall when they’re not eligible to do so. These students even secure rooms. These students are the ones causing problems that ruin those universities’ reputation. They even perform poorly in their working field when they graduate, which as a whole spoils those universities’’ integrity. We see what is happening every day. It’s even worse considering the fact that those in authority are providing an avenue for these students to become future leaders of this country. This is not fair. PNG needs genuine patriotic citizens who will live for this country. Something should be done to address this issue. We cannot sit down and continue to watch corruption ruining our academic institutions, producing a bunch of unethical and incompetent personnel who will easily turn into dishonest practices or facilitate corruption.
