But in our society it is not seen as normal due to our indigenous principals that we embrace which leads to carnal knowledge, rights violation, physical, sexual, and verbal abuse, sexual harassments, and to an extreme extent as rape occurs.
Though there are loop holes in our judicial system that devalue the penalties which enables the continuity of the wicked practices, it is us the individuals that need to straighten our mind-set and make things right in order to live a jubilant life.
Therefore, the concept I hope for comprehension is that the term opposite means the complete opposite composite in any circumstances of a particular substance.
Thus, the mind-set and self-conscious nature in one self-gender is totally different from the other and vice versa.
The state should initiate innovative remedies to facilitate the move towards erecting an anti-GBV society.
Inject pennies from our corruption-infiltrated economy into educating the population on the differences in human nature regarding both genders.
Theoretically, it will enlighten the reasoning capacity of the inept civil society in order to boost their understanding capabilities which will then lead to restore trust in every relationship that will eventually eliminate GBV in our society.
Thus, it is part of our evolutionary change from our male-dominated (Melanesian) society into a merged society of gender-equity (western) Melanesian society.
We would eliminate GBV in our society if the citizens are well educated in understanding how the life of a female works from that of a male and vice versa.
Change now for the good of tomorrow as we can’t alter the past.
Remember, a well-informed mind can pierce through rocks.

Petrus GAND

Social-Justice-Advocate

Next : PNG Must Prohibit Polygamous Marriage As It Segregates Gender

PNG Must Prohibit Polygamous Marriage as it Segregates Gender

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/png-must-prohibit-polygamous-marriage-as-it-segregates-gender

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/png-must-prohibit-polygamous-marriage-as-it-segregates-gender#comments

PNG Domestic Violence News

By Petrus GAND We should not turn a blind eye on the issues affecting the lives of our mothers and sisters, nor shall we sit and spectate. The UNO and its institutions such as WHO and Amnesty International envisioned that every person must enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.Women, Peace and Security activities are not standalone efforts but an integral part of regional peace and security discussions [...]

By Petrus GAND

We should not turn a blind eye on the issues affecting the lives of our mothers and sisters, nor shall we sit and spectate.

The UNO and its institutions such as WHO and Amnesty International envisioned that every person must enjoy all the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

Women, Peace and Security activities are not standalone efforts but an integral part of regional peace and security discussions, in line with regional efforts of promoting gender equality.

But the modern state, combined with some enduring aspects of traditional cultures and Christianity, has perpetuated patriarchal beliefs, ideas, attitudes and institutions. This facilitates gender inequality to be a societal norm. It may be an existential-threat on the lives of females, it is also overlooked and socially accepted.

Dating for money or self-sustainability and polygamous marriage are common practises surrounded within the parcel of indirect-prostitution. With prostitution comes organised crimes such as human (women, girls and children) trafficking, the transmission of STIs, including HIV/AIDS and ancillary crimes such as acts of GBV and forced and marital rape.

Human trafficking accompanies gender disparity because of male superiority. Females are reportedly subjected to sex trafficking by members of their immediate family or tribe. Parents force their daughters into marriages or child sex-trafficking to settle debts or to support their families.

Tribes around PNG present girls as rewards to war lords and mercenaries during tribal war-fares, while a customary obligation involves a ‘bride price’ of money paid to the wife's family by the husband's family. This is sometimes used as a debt to compel women to remain in abusive or servile marriages, which increases the probability of polygamous marriage and related consequences.

As in the 2019 incident of Jenelyn Kennedy, she was just 19 and a mother of two children brutally murdered, allegedly by her partner in Port Moresby. She had an intimate marriage with her husband despite her husband’s multiple partners. She deliberately exposed to the harms she encountered. Eventually it ended with her life being squeezed-out by the hands of her husband.

While gender discrepancy being socially accepted, it is statistically heightened yet furiously life-threatening. The Criminal Code Amendment Act 2013 criminalised most forms of sex trafficking and all forms of labour trafficking, although there is no law that interdicts both polygamy and polyandry marriages, which obstructs gender equality not only legally and socially but psychologically as well.

All of which accumulates in erupting a socio-economic security agenda that undermines females’ rights and participation at the community level to the national, whereby the need to foster active role of females in parliament remains an unsolved concern.

Petrus GAND

Social-Justice-Advocate

Email:gpetrusbar@gmal.com

Next : Young Girls Worst Mistakes - False Security

Young Girls Worst Mistakes - False Security

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/young-girls-worst-mistakes-false-security

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/young-girls-worst-mistakes-false-security#comments

Gender Based Violence in PNG

By Tony Charles Wattz KerowaYoung girls often make the worst mistakes when they rush into falling for a perfect life and easy way out of material inconveniences they are faced with by making rush decision which often turns sour. In search of a better life, younge girls falling for luxury such as Sexy cars, smart phones, free aeroplane tickets, hotel accommodations, believing in conniving sweet talks promising the whole world as a bed of rose by the very experienced sugar daddy. T [...]

By Tony Charles Wattz Kerowa
Young girls often make the worst mistakes when they rush into falling for a perfect life and easy way out of material inconveniences they are faced with by making rush decision which often turns sour.
In search of a better life, younge girls falling for luxury such as Sexy cars, smart phones, free aeroplane tickets, hotel accommodations, believing in conniving sweet talks promising the whole world as a bed of rose by the very experienced sugar daddy.
They fall for the wallet full of cash or fat bank account by throwing away their dignity, destroying their Education (their only key to unlock their future opportunity to rise up from poverty), disrespecting their parents and guardians hard work and investment to see them become somebody better in the future. They abruptly destroy themselves by cheaply ending up by tangling themselves with married man who otherwise older than their fathers and are even two or three times older than their age who's children are older.

The perception of being healthy and wealthy sometimes ends up in misery thus making themselves looking so foolish in the eyes of others.
These false hope of becoming mummy boss to materials they never worked for in the first instance is a false Security.
If you love and respect yourself, just don't make rush decision.
They mostly end up becoming second, third or fourth wife to the pleasure of the dominant male partners. This is the marriage of convenience.
The man tries to showoff his status and ego perceiving to be a big man when he is not, whereas the woman becomes the fool trying to hold on to something she feels insecure but she has never worked for.
This is where the competition will become tough as those women who were there in the man's life will fight tooth and nail to claim ownership of all earthly possession the man own.
The young woman will fight a loosing battle as you will be seen as an intruder... you can not own what you did not work for.
You can not claim what you did not earn.... period.
Wish you all a wonderful life's journey... beautiful girls.

Stop Killing Woman, says PNG Prime Minister

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/stop-killing-woman-says-png-prime-minister

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/stop-killing-woman-says-png-prime-minister#comments

Gender Based Violence in PNG

PNG PRIME Minister James Marape says those who continue to commit crimes in the pretext of sorcery must be arrested and charged by police.Marape was responding to questions asked by The National in relation to the death of Mary Kopari who was killed by an angry mob over allegations of sorcery in Margarima, Hela.“People shouldn’t be killing women or girls over sorcery, as far as Papua New Guinea is concerned,” During my reign I had the opportunity to: serve as a youth representative when the United Nations Deputy Secretary General visited; be the first Miss Papua New Guinea/Pacific Islands to visit the women’s unit at Bomana Prison; and used my voice to advocate for the empowerment of women through sport.
When my term ended in late 2020, rather than hand the crown to my successor, the pandemic presented other plans. A pageant could not be held and therefore when asked to continue my service as Miss Papua New Guinea/Pacific Islands, I willingly agreed.

However, the time has come to move forward with the next chapter of my life. While some have implied that the crown was taken from me, that is not the case. Instead, in agreement with the Pageant Committee, I completed my service as Miss PNG Pacific Islands 2019-2020. I thank the Pageant Committee, partners and sponsors to the pageant, as well as the many who have supported me; The PNG Special Parliamentary Committee on Gender-Based Violence, The United Nations in Papua New Guinea, and especially my sponsor, Paga Hill Estate. I also want to thank the many people who have reached out to me in the past few weeks with messages of encouragement and support.
The opportunity to represent PNG on this unique platform gave me a great perspective on the visibility and value of the Pageant to not only each participant, but more importantly to young women across our land. Further, my interactions with many young women, and my own recent public adversities has given me a fresh perspective on the struggles our women face to simply be their authentic selves. I am someone who grows stronger with adversity but my heart goes out to those who have faced similar experiences without the kind of support I have received and who fail to see the ignorance for what it is.
Thus, as I have completed my term, I will continue to help others. This experience inspired me to use my voice for those who have no voice and to stand strong against those who desire to tear down and destroy young women. In the words of Governor Allan Bird, “What kind of society does not condemn the torture and killing of women yet gets upset when a young woman does a dance video.” My hope is that we as a society can focus on the right priorities. We must grow to be more accepting of one another, to be kinder to one another, and to learn to appreciate our individuality and diversity which is one of the many things that makes PNG unique.
Unfortunately, my recent adversities serves as a sad reminder of how far we have to go as a country. While I endured public abuse and harassment online, thousands of women around the country and the world are being subjected to daily physical and psychological abuse. Quite often they are silent, in constant fear of further abuse and backlash. These women, and sometimes men, are sadly not as privileged as me. I have decided to use the platform I have to be a voice for women and men like these who need all of us to take a stand on their behalf.
As I move forward with my career and education I will look back on this experience with gratitude for the opportunity I had to be Miss Papua New Guinea/Pacific Islands 2019-2020 and for the love and support that has been shown to me personally. I have immense gratitude for those who are working to make PNG a land of opportunity for all and am committed to continue to contribute where I can.

Next : PNG Law Society Condemns Gender Based Violence

PNG Law Society Condemns Gender based Violence

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/png-law-socity-condemns-gender-based-violence

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/png-law-socity-condemns-gender-based-violence#comments

Gender Based Violence in PNG

PNG Law Society

The Papua New Guinea Law Society condemns all forms of gender and family based violence. In a statement by the Lawyers’ peak body, it said that the prevalence of the problem calls for renewed and concerted efforts by all concerned to weed out this ill from our society. The National Government’s Policy statement on the issue was the culmination of great work by relevant Government agencies and development partners to understand the problem and suggest workable solutions as an inclusive [...]

The Papua New Guinea Law Society condemns all forms of gender and family based violence.

In a statement by the Lawyers’ peak body, it said that the prevalence of the problem calls for renewed and concerted efforts by all concerned to weed out this ill from our society.

The National Government’s Policy statement on the issue was the culmination of great work by relevant Government agencies and development partners to understand the problem and suggest workable solutions as an inclusive whole of government response on gender based violence, which followed through with important legislative reforms and programs.

Parliament has amended provisions of the Criminal Code to increase deterrent penalties. The Family Protection Act also simplifies the process of enabling the vulnerable to access justice and seek protection from the law. The Women’s Safe House concept has also provided a further medium to shelter women needing protection from violence perpetrated by spouses or intimate partners.

On reflection however, given the prevalence of this kind of violence, it seems more work is required. Appreciating that this is a complex and cross cutting issue, perhaps we can look at what the research has flagged to inform the way forward. Do we need to change our perceived customary practises and cultural beliefs about gender and sexual difference and hierarchical relations? Do we need to re-arrange the way we think about male privilege, power and patriarchy? Is a further contributor associated with a lack of economic and education opportunities and a breakdown in the family unit and family values? We pose these questions to see how we can foster change.

Turning to what we can immediately influence, it has been suggested that we have sufficient laws but law enforcers need to be better resourced. A good starting point, in the short term, would be to re-visit our enforcement of the law. The Family and Sexual Violence Unit of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary should be empowered and sufficiently resourced to effectively do its job.

Training and on-going awareness campaigns on gender based violence by relevant Government agencies, Civil Society Groups and Non-Government Organisations on pre-empitve strategies can be another way of educating our people against gender based violence.

Government should also consider establishing a legal aid fund to support survivors and their families to access and gain justice. Such justice ought to be on the premise that compensation is not justice, and law enforcement and justice agencies must apply this principle.

On other issues, the Society has asked members of the public using social media platforms to refrain from making personal attacks on lawyers. This follows adverse comments about a lawyer who is representing a recent alleged offender. All alleged offenders are entitled to legal representation and lawyers can choose to represent anyone requiring legal assistance

In this respect, the PNG Law Society, in consultation with its lawyer members, will give consideration to establishing a limited legal aid service for persons requiring legal advice and assistance with accessing the courts on GBV issues.
Next : Convicted Criminals To Be Put To Death In PNG

Is PNG a Safe Place for a Female?

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/is-png-a-safe-place-for-a-female

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/is-png-a-safe-place-for-a-female#comments

Gender Based Violence in PNG

By Dulciana Somare-Brash, former Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare's daughterThe death of a very young mother after a life of violent abuse has triggered much public condemnation and inadvertently some soul searching by our people online and elsewhere. Last week a woman carrying a placard at a related protest came under attack online for daring to reveal the underbelly of the broader issue of Gender Based Violence (GBV), Family sexual violence and abuse in Papua New Guinea (PNG). She stated as pictured: “PNG is not a safe place to be a female.”

Commentators online felt that that was a matter of opinion; in fact many suggested her opinion was the wrong one. Relegating her lived experiences and the stories of so many women and girls to mere futile complaints that betrayed PNGs reality. Both men and women online were horrified at the confronting placard.

I want to express why I agree with that woman’s sentiment about our general safety as females. For many reasons I feel unsafe in my own country. This is why. In PNG our ‘risk profile’ is very weak. That’s an evaluation of an individual/organisations willingness and ability to take risk in our jurisdiction as an investment destination. Lots of things matter in that space including how citizens treat one another and how leaders treat their constituents, visitors and our future.

Our economic trajectory is the weakest it’s been for a long time since independence. Despite that we still blame others, we seem to resent foreign investors and we loath anyone who wants to legitimately follow due process and respect universal governance standards.

Internally, we can’t afford the interest component(s) on our expensive loans yet we borrow with impunity. Taxes paid by investors & citizens are not going to accessible public goods and services. Donors are treated suspiciously. Our recurrent spend as a nation is very high but we’re not taking bold steps to improve internal revenue; (money collection) to pay for our own bills (public sector wages, utilities, office space etc.) yet we spend like we’ve had decades of surplus budgets and robust sovereign wealth funds.

We can’t agree on a single strategy to leverage our resource wealth, we don’t have deep conversations or dialogue to transparently share our collective resource benefits (resource taxes & dividends). We can’t manage exponential population growth, urban drift, environmental pollution or climate change but (pre-COVID) we were still going on junkets overseas to talk about them.

We’ve normalised all serious law and order issues and crime has become a way of life while we shun any real policy planning and enforcement. The ‘youth bulge’ reveals only that we have more children than educated adults with schools poorly equipped to train them.

We haven’t turned a profit from a single State Owned Enterprise (SOE) with good consistent reforms. In cities 80+ children sit in a classroom with a single teacher (shocking student/teacher ratio). In many villages there are no teachers or students. We haven’t prosecuted a single MP for gross misconduct in office in the last 5 years. We can’t be bothered to collect data, so we can’t economically model our policies so as to spend frugally on priority areas for growth and sustainability. We’ve never taken on the recommendations of a commission of inquiry to legislate, regulate or prosecute against administrative wrongdoing.

We haven’t grown our GDP base or created new equity markets for jobs, taxes and economic growth to thrive. We haven’t right sized our enormous public service or stopped paying the ‘ghosts’ on the public payroll. We haven’t managed inflation through fiscal or monetary policy so affordable living and housing become a reality.

We don’t understand the importance & link between critical export revenue & a devalued Kina. SME’s can’t save their meager earnings because the cost of living is so high (water, power, food, fuel, transport). The cost of doing business is killing local business and foreign investors alike. We have so many “energy mix” opportunities but we prefer diesel generators so electricity prices will still be our greatest cost.

No one has life, health or home insurance because we can’t afford today so how do we save for tomorrow? Commercial banks are ripping everyone off with veiled fees and bad manners. Hospitals are falling apart with great workers that don’t get acknowledged.

We don’t have a solution for the cash flow crisis or the foreign exchange nightmare. Some foreigners are bribing us blatantly in exchange for our birthrights. Land grabs are the norm and violence is a favourite pastime now.

In amongst all these woes are regular people with zero influence. Sadly it’s largely women who spectate through all these highly political macroeconomic and development challenges. The contention here is that men decide everything for this country - they always have. This to me says something. It’s an anomaly. Our country’s financial, political and socio-cultural health is in the hands of people who are indifferent about how we – the other half of the population (as women) feel about our current and future nation state, our livelihood and our collective wellbeing.

If I am being honest, this is the scorecard in PNG. The rage we are witnessing may be caused by decades of accepting standards of others, our people are angrier than they’ve ever been because perhaps we are growing and changing and many more of us are competing for fewer services and even less opportunities. And everything costs money and not everyone has it. And frankly all our modern and historic influences struggle to coexist, fuse with or trump (where relevant) our embedded ancestral ways.

So we have come to worship the magic powers of money that make things appear and challenges (and people) disappear. Plainly, we don’t know how or why we got here. But as always, women are relegated to being an object, named and shamed or bashed and humiliated for reacting to the symptoms of the systematic breakdown of a governing structure that is failing us all...not just women.

Frankly, let’s consider some facts in PNG; Women didn’t lead a political impasse, ever. No woman set our own army on our own people. No woman led men to illegally remove a legitimate government. No woman had a windfall and spent 2 weeks in a hotel room with young boys! No professional woman stalks and lures young boys outside schools. No woman held up a man at gunpoint to sexually assault and humiliate him before stealing his car and possessions. No woman committed PNG to billions of Kina’s worth of expensive commercial debt. No woman colluded with other women with intent to defraud the State.

No woman forced a man to vote for her. No woman destroyed ballot boxes to win an election. No woman raped a man in custody. No woman paid the family of a man for him to be her slave or sex object. No woman led a violent attack on entire villages or made a poor decision about the future of our resource wealth by ignoring landowners, laws and process. No woman paid a public official to make evidence disappear. No woman has ever been in charge of any of the 3 arms of government.

No woman watched a man give birth to a child and then ignored that gift of life. No woman beat a breastfeeding person or pregnant individual for not preparing a meal. No woman drove a PMV drunk and killed scores of innocent passengers. No woman wore an official police uniform, carried a high-powered gun and raided the money and buai of men selling ice blocks & Mutrus for a living.

As women, we are spectators in our own lives. No man (or woman) should tell me I’m safe here in PNG when I have so little control over everything that happens around me and to me, in my world that simply means I’m unsafe as a female in PNG. [And don’t bother telling me to leave my country either, just do your part to break the cycle. I plan to].

If we could count the hours and cost of lost productivity stemming from violence and abuse in this country, we would literally lose decades (in lost man hours). We would also lose billions of Kina in lost productivity from entire PNG families reconfiguring every aspect of their daily lives to give violence a place in our homes.

When we “man up” and start disrupting illogical patriarchal beliefs, we create freedoms, we take power away from a few, we reduce the value of money to unduly influence people, we restore the value of people, we repair a system that needs our collective help to fix, and yes we create new rules for everyone we didn’t even know we had the power to create.

Next : PNG Domestic Violence Statistics

WOMAN VIOLENTLY BASHED BY SON-IN-LAW in PNG

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/woman-violently-bashed-by-son-in-law-in-png

https://www.pngfacts.com/gender-based-violence-png/woman-violently-bashed-by-son-in-law-in-png#comments

PNG Domestic Violence News

'The New Year Celebrations did not go down well with one family in Port Moresby.Lero Pat from Mendi, in the Southern Highlands Province, almost lost her life when she was repeatedly bashed up by her son-in-law on New Year’s Night. Her son-in-law is a prominent Lawyer and Principal Founder of a reknowned Law Firm.As millions welcomed in the New Year with celebration, it was a horrific experience for Lero Pat, a mother of five young girls from Mendi in the Southern Highlands Province, who res [...]

'The New Year Celebrations did not go down well with one family in Port Moresby.

Lero Pat from Mendi, in the Southern Highlands Province, almost lost her life when she was repeatedly bashed up by her son-in-law on New Year’s Night.
Her son-in-law is a prominent Lawyer and Principal Founder of a reknowned Law Firm.

As millions welcomed in the New Year with celebration, it was a horrific experience for Lero Pat, a mother of five young girls from Mendi in the Southern Highlands Province, who resides in Port Moresby.

She visited the EMTV Studio to tell her of her ordeal.

Lero claims it’s not the first time her son-in-law has bashed her up badly. This has been happening since her daughter married a prominent lawyer about three years ago. Lero claims one of her younger daughters was also allegedly raped by this lawyer.

Lero was rushed to Port Moresby General Hospital where she received eight stitches to her head and it’s a sad case for her as she will have one of her fingers amputated, all the bones being crushed by the tyre rim that was used to repeatedly bash her.

She has reported the matter at the Boroko Police Station, but they required a Medical report. She got that done, and now wants police to deal with the matter and ensure perpetrators of violence against women are put behind bars.'
