At a packed National Football Stadium (NFL) the visiting Penrith Panthers proved too strong for the SP Hunters in the Hunters only trial match before the beginning of the Queensland Intrust Super Cup 2016 season. Before the players and officials took to the field the new NFL Stadium was opened by Prime Minister Peter O’Neil who then officially kicked off the match. The Panthers team made up of Jamie Soward the only notable NRL player along with Papua New Guinean Wellington Albert and a host of young Penrith players from the NSW Cup side dominated much of the match. The Hunters unveiled a new look side with regulars Noel Zeming, Ase Boas, Wartovo Puari and Stargroth Amean however the new look side were good in patches resulting in an error riddled match. In a post match interview Hunters Coach Michael Marum admitted that “Errors cost us the game so we need to work on this area and a few of our combinations but we will get better week in week out” The NFS was sold out as 15,000 fans made up of families, individuals turned up to witness the Hunters and Panthers trial match, with Jamie Soward working the crowd to a frenzy every time he approached the stands the final score Panthers 20 defeating the PNG Hunters 12
