Source: The National, Monday 13th August 2012 PNG Kumuls coach Adrian Lam was adamant that the lengthy rugby league court battle was over so the Kumuls preparation for the World Cup should start immediately. Lam is also pinning his hopes on a “hero”, probably a politician from the national government with rugby league at heart to come forward and make some decisions to move the game immediately. The Australian-based coach was responding to the case taken by disgruntled leagues from the Highlands against the PNGRFL which was thrown out by the National Court recently. The former Kumuls captain said rugby league was on its knees, and PNGRL needed a hero to step up and make some tough calls.
In regards to the preparation for the World Cup, Lam said he would like to identify and name a 40-man squad as soon as possible and then cut it down to 18 in five weeks for the Prime Minister’s XIII Games next month. He said he would love to have a squad of 25-man soon after the PM’s XIII to come together for four development camps to fast track players to where PNG need them to be. Lam would like to encourage PNGRFL to take the Prime Minister’s representative game up to the highlands, either in Hagen or Goroka, next season. PNG needed to share the international matches around the country for young players and supporters to watch and enjoy. The coach said he needed the development camps so he could spend time with individual players to assist in improving their skills, fitness and strength. In order to achieve this, PNG Kumul desperately needed funding and sponsorship. Lam said he would like to see PNG Kumuls to play against team either the NRL or UK Super League in a trial early next year or a post-season game so the players could create their combinations. He also would like to see PNG select a Zone side to play a matches over one weekend against two representative sides from Digicel Cup competition because there was no other game representative matches after the regular season had ended.
